Hegemony - preponderant influence or authority. Implies dominance.
Gerrymander - arrangement of voting districts to favor one party or candidate. Named for Elbridge Gerry, governor of Massachuesetts in 1884, who created a salamander-shaped district out of Essex county; hence, Gerry-mander.
Zeitgeist - the spirit of any time. The moral and intellectual trend of any age or period.
Picaresque - of, or dealing with, sharp-witted vagabonds and their roguish adventures. (So, kind of close, Docboy? Maybe? Not really? No, not at all.)

I always thought the Ivy League was a gardening club...
Anywho. Wives: 1 Jane, 2 Anne's and 3 Catherine's.
And simple machines... I can think of six: Levers, pulleys, screws, inclined planes, wedges and wheels. I might be wrong about screws, but I thought I'd heard that one before... *shrugs*
